Why I became a Frontline Brand Manager – and why you should apply

I get asked why I study Law and Sociology a lot and my answer has always been that I am interested in how the law affects people. 6% of care leavers go to University compared to 38% of all young people (UK GOV 2011). Social workers play such an important role in society and it’s a shame the profession’s reputation doesn’t match its importance. 

Frontline stood out to me because it has a clear mission: to transform the lives of vulnerable children by recruiting and developing outstanding individuals to be leaders in social work and broader society. I am really interested in the idea of following on to the leadership programme because I think it would be such a great experience. But if I don’t, I would like to think that I have really helped to make some progress with this mission.

I talk to a lot of people that have never even considered social work an option – I was in the same position this time last year – and it really does feel great when someone just gets it. Even where people don’t think social work is right for them, the fact that Frontline gets the message out there; that people are beginning to think about social work as a viable career. It really does feel like Frontline is going somewhere and taking great steps forward.

As a Brand Manager with Frontline I get paid to develop my interpersonal and organisational skills. I get paid to talk about why I think Frontline is such a great opportunity – which I would probably be doing anyway – and I get experience in things I had never considered doing before (such as marketing). I also get the great feeling that comes with working towards something that you really believe in.

I would encourage anyone to go for the role. You might want to go into marketing; you might be really interested in the third sector, or maybe public services; you might just love talking to people. If you really believe in the scheme, I can’t recommend it enough. The skills and experience that come with working alongside the brilliant people in Frontline’s head office will help you develop as a person (and it will look great on your CV!)

The best advice I can give to someone who wants to apply is to just go for it. I applied on a whim. While I was interested in Frontline as an organisation, I hadn’t had much in the way of marketing experience and I didn’t really have anything that made me stand out as a candidate, I wasn’t expecting to get the position but the recruitment team must have liked something about me. Don’t over-think things, if you are enthusiastic about the mission, just go for it.
