Closing the gap: social mobility and social work

5th June 2017

Last month we proudly welcomed Rt Hon Alan Milburn to speak at our latest Stories of Change event. Joining him were a diverse mix of Frontline and Firstline participants, fellows and others from Frontline’s wider network of partners and supporters.

Alan Milburn is the Chair of the Social Mobility Commission, an advisory body established to monitor the progress of government and others in improving social mobility and reducing child poverty in the United Kingdom. A former member of parliament for the Labour party, he has served in several cabinet roles, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Secretary of State for Health.

At the event, he spoke about the current state of social mobility in the UK, and went on to explore the role that social workers can play in ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to succeed, regardless of their background.
