Former children’s minister, Edward Timpson CBE KC, announced as new Frontline chair

Former children’s minister Edward Timpson will take on the role of chair of Frontline’s board of trustees in January 2026, the children’s charity has today announced. Edward will succeed Lord Tony Hall, who is stepping down after holding the role for four years.
Mary Jackson, Frontline chief executive, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Edward as chair of our board of trustees. As it is Children of Foster Carers’ Week, this news of Edward’s appointment comes at a particularly fitting moment given his lifelong connection to fostering and commitment to supporting vulnerable children in both his professional life and particularly during his parliamentary career. It’s this experience and leadership that will be invaluable to Frontline, as we continue our mission to create lasting change for those who need it most.’
Edward grew up in a family that fostered more than 90 children and adopted two, alongside his three siblings. His father, Sir John Timpson CBE, and mother, Alex, dedicated their lives to providing loving homes for children who needed them most – an experience that profoundly shaped Edward’s values and career.
Edward Timpson is also a former Conservative MP and minister of state for children and families, and has spent much of his career championing the needs of children at risk of harm, particularly those in care and on the edge of care. His leadership and deep understanding of the sector will be invaluable as Frontline continues its mission to develop outstanding social work practice and leadership across England.
As well as a new chair, the charity is also excited to welcome two additional trustees to the board – former civil servant, Chris Kelly and assurance and risk director, Clare Schmid.
Edward Timpson commented on his appointment: ‘Ever since my parents started fostering 45 years ago, children’s social work has always been a part of my life. It’s why I appreciate just how demanding, vital and fulfilling it can be in helping turn children and families’ lives around. I am delighted to become chair of Frontline and to be able to help them and others working across all services which help children at risk of harm, to recruit, train and develop more great people who share our passion for putting children first.’
Tony Hall, outgoing chair, reflected on his time leading the board: ‘It has been a privilege to serve as chair of Frontline’s board of trustees. Over the past years, I’ve been continually inspired by the dedication and impact of everyone involved in supporting social workers and improving the lives of children and families across the country. As I step down, I want to thank the incredible team, my fellow trustees and all our partners for their commitment and passion. I have every confidence that Frontline will continue to go from strength to strength in the years ahead, under Edward’s expert guidance.’
Frontline is a children’s charity, dedicated to supporting children at risk of harm by improving the services that support them. This is done through work that focuses on improving practice, leadership and innovating system change to support the people who need it most.
