A father’s perspective: a social workers support

After Jane’s health took a serious turn following the birth of their child, her and her husband, Joel, faced an incredibly challenging time.

After Jane’s health took a serious turn following the birth of her child, she and her husband, Joel, faced an incredibly challenging time. During this period, their child was placed into care because they were unable to care for them. However, *Leela, an Approach participant, provided them with the support and guidance they needed.

When Joel and Jane welcomed their child into the world, their lives were quickly overshadowed by a heartbreaking crisis. * Just after Jane gave birth, she was hospitalised. As a new father, Joel was already overwhelmed by the sudden responsibility, but also there was an added layer of fear for his wife’s condition felt like an unbearable weight. He was lost and unsure of how to cope.

When Joel was overwhelmed with the shock of his wife’s condition and unable to step into his new parental role, Leela helped him stay connected to their child. By meeting the family where they were and building a relationship with them as individuals first, she supported them and the extended family to develop a bond with their new baby. Always available when they needed her, Leela answered the phone whenever they called and ensured  that Joel had time to be with their child by arranging family time. Taking the time to understand their heritage, she also played traditional lullabies to their chid, helping them feel connected to their culture. Above all, she reminded Joel and Jane, even in the middle of chaos, they could still be present as parents.

Leela’s empathy was unwavering and her professionalism was evident in every interaction. There was never a moment where they felt judged. She wasn’t just a social worker, but she became a part of their family’s journey. Without her their journey would have taken a very different path.

Thankfully, Jane made a full recovery and their child was returned to their care. Leela’s understanding of their situation helped them navigate one of the most difficult times in their lives. They were all so grateful for everything she did for them. Thank you, Leela. Joel and Jane will forever be grateful for your presence in their lives.
